In a way, the girl's life
begins from a sadman's seed and the barren womb of a motherwhore; a bumbling tycoon and his oil-rich pageant queen are leafing through the contents of an
unmarked manila folder -- hushed-up papers with pictures of pretty-penny children.
Mr. & Mrs. Eustace Adam Gage do not want a baby; they want a little girl with pretty hair and good teeth; rosy-cheek'd and wide-eyed; doll-like in tiny, immaculate dresses from Bergdorf's. "That one," says Mirium Gage. "She's darling," replies her husband.

The girl's first memory is of
a thick-boned Creole witch, armed to the teeth with silver and quartz, reeking of sage. "I'm here to take you to your new home, miss," says the
witch.
"What's your name?" asks the girl. The witch crosses herself; her dream gods have warned her of the ancient shadows in a girlchild's eyes, the way they scorch; coalfires -- consume the light, the air surrounding. "My name is Hortense, miss." "Are you going to take care of me, Hortense?" White-knuckled, the witch grips for a talisman around her neck; some thing semi-precious -- silver, crystal, or a god of hers -- digs into her palm, emboldens her. "I see you, miss. Mark my words, I can see you. So, I promise you now, I'll be good to you, miss, I swear it. I'll be loyal. So don't you turn your curse on me, no ma'm, I don't want it."

out of the fog, you're calling my name I wanted to call for nothing your careless heart, you know you got it crawl into bed and try to forget (forget) But Apollo will not burn the child; the sunlight does not hurt her eyes. She can stare into the sun, naked-eye witch. Hortense finds her screaming; the screaming doesn't stop until the body gives (and even then --) when we go down, you lost the courage when we go down, you're so ferocious. Robed and gentle, the men move her; silvertip'd libations; wait for her to rise. It's alright, they chant, you're safe now. "I can stare into the sun." "Phin, we believe you're starting to remember things from before you came to live with your mommy and daddy." "You don't understand. I can stare into the sun." "Are you remembering things, Phin? Your life before your new family?" "If you stared into the sun, you'd go blind." "I know it must be scary, suddenly remembering things that you didn't even know happened." "You're not making any sense. I can stare into the sun."
